By the time of the 1917 Revolution, illness had confined the artist to a wheelchair and he could only observe the revolutionary crowds from his window. Of his view of the revolution Kustodiev said, "Here everything is still in full swing, the streets are still full of people ... I never complained so much about my life, which does not allow me to go out onto the street—you have to wait for such a street for centuries."
